Bush Tucker Garden

Winthrop Primary School is creating an Aboriginal Bush Tucker garden as part of the student's study of Indigenous Australians. Many students including Annie Chua's year 2 students have been involved in selecting and planting native edible plants. Dot Davies and Steve our Gardener worked hard prior to planting to remove existing bushes, prepare the ground and purchase new plants. This project aims to increase awareness of our cultural heritage and to value the importance of our Aboriginal history. With luck, these plants will develop into beautiful bushes and produce edible products for our enjoyment.

Sustainability

The Years 1-2 are participating in 'No Wrap Thursday'. On Thursdays, we ask you to send your child's recess and lunch in a reusable container (including drinks). If you have plastic sandwich boxes, they keep sandwiches etc really fresh and wrapping in plastic wrap or foil is unnecessary. Students have been practising sorting their lunch waste, including food scraps for the earth worms. There were many pieces of whole fruit in the bin this week. I have been advising students to take large amounts of food home, that is either too much for them or that they don't like, and talk to their parents about why they didn't eat their lunch, to avoid such wastage. Much of the plastic rubbish is made up of single serve biscuits, yoghurts and juice boxes. Please consider buying in bulk and freezing juice and yoghurt in reusable plastic containers for the hot weather ahead. We hope that you find that with a bit of tweaking that it is not that hard and you may be able to send no wrap lunches on other days too. We thank you for your support in making the WPS students conscious of the ways in which they can live an environment friendly lifestyle.
