The Japanese language program at Winthrop Primary School was established in 1993 and expanded to a full program in 2000 with all Year 3 to 6 students attending 1 weekly lesson.

Winthrop students are enthusiastic in their learning of the Japanese language and culture. One of our common goals is to read the Hiragana script as soon as possible.

In 2004, 10 Winthrop students made an inaugural study visit to Namazu Elementary School in Gifu Prefecture. Namazu students also returned their visit in 2006 and 2008, with Winthrop students making a second trip in 2007.
