Winthrop Primary School opened its doors on January 30th 1991 with 381 children in Pre Primary to Year 7 classes. In 2011 the school celebrated 20 years of public education and was also awarded Independent Public School status.

In May, 1989, a Parents and Citizens Association was established and it robustly lobbied the State Government of the time for early consideration for a primary school. In October 1989, Education Minister, Carmen Lawrence stated that $3.5 million would be allocated to build a primary school in Winthrop by 1991.The school was established to ease pressures at Bateman and Kardinya primary schools and to cater for the large residential suburb of Winthrop.

Construction on the school finished on time with 16 classrooms, a pre-primary centre, covered assembly area, canteen, library resource centre, music room, art and craft room and an administration block.

Winthrop Primary School is a highly regarded Independent Public School set on a hilltop in a family friendly suburb located 12km south of Perth. It is close to Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch University, Murdoch Hospital and a short drive to the Port of Fremantle.

The school population of 650 students includes 48% of children who come from homes where English is an Additional Language (EAL/D).

We have very experienced staff, including 9 Level 3 Classroom Teachers. In addition to an inclusive classroom curriculum, Winthrop Primary School provides special programs in Music, Japanese, Science and Health.

At Winthrop Primary School we strive to ensure that students 'Learn and Grow Together'.

The achievements and progress of our school are strongly supported by parents who are actively involved at all levels of the school program. This is evident in the work of the School Board, Parents and Citizens, Parent Class Representatives, Band Committee, Canteen Committee and Uniform Shop.
